Andreas Østhagen is currently working as a program coordinator/fellow at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS) in Oslo. He also serves as Director for Norway at The Arctic Institute, having participated since the beginning. His Arctic passion stems as much from his everyday work, as from his heritage as a citizen of the Norwegian Arctic (Bodø, North Norway).
Before returning to Oslo, he was the Acting Director, and before that an advisor, at the North Norway European Office in Brussels. The office is responsible for representing the interests of the Norwegian Arctic to the European Union and monitoring relevant EU policies.
Previously he has worked on Arctic and security issues at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington D.C., as well as the Walter & Duncan Gordon Foundation in Toronto, while also taking part in the Arctic research programme 'Geopolitics in the High North' through his affiliation with the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies (IFS).
Andreas has a particular focus on the mapping of different actors and interests as the Arctic develops, covering natural resource exploitation, regional development and international affairs. His publications range from the EU's role in the Arctic to case specific developments in the North American and Norwegian Arctic.
Andreas holds a Master of Science (MSc) from the London School of Economics (LSE) in European and international affairs, in addition to a joint Bachelor degree in political economy from the University of Bergen and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
